The situation
Industrial cable connector manufacturer.
More than 900 past-due production orders were inherited.
What was found
The company already owned MRP scheduling capability that it had never turned on.
What was done
The production scheduling process was redesigned, and the MRP scheduling capability was activated.
The result
Past-due orders came down 78% within six weeks.
Standard lead times were cut from six weeks to two, and the efficiency gains allowed the plant to consolidate from two shifts to one while maintaining customer output.
Why it matters
Past-due orders and long lead times are not always a capacity problem. Here the capability to fix them was already owned. It just had not been switched on.
